Decorating your room - It’s good for you
Is the phrase ‘your room is a mirror’ familiar to you at all? If you’re curious about what that could possibly mean, it's basically a clever way to say that the space that you live in is a direct reflection of you as a person (hence the mirror part). Big or small, that space is yours to live in and it should feel like it. That being said, there’s no harm in sprucing up your surroundings to add that eclectic flare that you uniquely have to where you study, decompress, and lay your head to rest at night.
Why decorate your room?
Decorating your room is deeper than just making it plain pretty to look at, it actually has some serious benefits for you aside from the visual appeal alone.
While your home is your sanctuary, your bedroom should feel like that even more so since it’s typically the place where you come home to work, play, idle, or rest/sleep. The average student will typically spend a lot of time in their room, so it’s helpful to let it become a place of self-expression.

According to Grand Rising Behavioral Health, self-expression is a necessary bridge between internal you and external everything else. It can help ease stress and anxiety by acting as a catalyst for self-focused meditation, it promotes healthy emotional regulation by helping manage big feelings in the form of creativity, and it can even uplifting self-esteem by positively impacting your self-image. Decorating is a key form of self expression in the form of taking your space and making it your own, and it’s fairly easy to do so!
Things you can add to your room!
Candle Warmer Light
Fluorescents are OUT this season and warm, moody lighting is in. Candle warmers have the added bonus of being a less fire prone way to enjoy a candle, leaving your room a calm, fragrant, and cozy nook. Don’t forget to turn it off when you leave!
‘Party’ paper streamers
Non-specific party streamers hanging from your ceiling can bring a light, playful vibe, like you’re throwing your own celebration for every day you wake up!Bonus points if you make your own by linking paper chain streamers or cutting out your own designs.
Corkboard
Nothing wrong with keeping on-task while having your plans organized, cute and cozy! Hang photos, flyers, your calendar, and Post-Its with just a few pushpins (bonus if they’re in the shape of something that is not a pushpin), and don’t be afraid to get a little cluttered with it.
Twine-folio
Hanging polaroids up with clothespins and twine is a concept familiar to most, but have you ever considered hanging up doodles, paper crafts, magazine clippings, keychains, notes from friends, or common pokemon cards? Side note, you can print 4” x 6” photos at Walmart for 12-16 cents a piece!
Painting your mirror
Whether you have a full body mirror as furniture or mirrors on your closet doors that you’re trying to keep cute while being renter-friendly, there’s a way to make a mirror mirror you– Remember those painting craft kit things you’d get as kids with the plastic thin paintbrush and the tubs of paint that were sometimes way too hard to open for no reason? That’s washable paint and they’re great for painting mirrors with little hassle for removal! Water and paper-towels get the color right off!
